Welcome to Waima to Laingholm Pest Free

Have you noticed that there are fewer native birds, lizards and butterflies in our area? Why is the rich and flourishing wildlife disappearing from our neighbourhood?

Pests are taking charge!  Possums, rats and other pests and other predators are out of control in our area. Raiding nests and killing chicks, they are wiping out the biodiversity of this beautiful place. Instead of safe and healthy spaces, our homes and gardens are becoming ghettos for vermin.

The situation is very serious.

Our children here in the future may not hear the tui, see the fantail fluttering around, or see the big woodpigeons or silvery skinks around our houses, unless we all get involved. We have started already and have many keen supporters!

Native wildlife will bounce back with our help

If everyone is involved – whether actively or as supporters – we residents can safely and easily make the whole of Waima to Laingholm into a Pest Free Zone, clean up the neighbourhood and bring back the dawn chorus. Please join us and get involved.

Public Meeting - Laingholm 3pm Sunday

Kia ora all locals in the Waima to Langholm pest free (W2L) zone. Currently we have over 150 traps deployed in our area, but we want more, a lot more. Please join us this weekend, buy a trap and become a supporter.

Attend

Laingholm
Where: Laingholm Village Hall
When: 3pm-5pm, Sunday 25th November

The meetings are timed to tie in with our next trapping pulse. We run four pulses a year over the following months:

March - June - September - December

At each pulse we ask all our members to put their traps out and report back to us on catches. By taking a coordinated approach we can have more impact than operating individually. By collecting catch data we can grow our understanding of the challenge we face and the impact we are having. It also assists us when applying for funding.

Get a trap

We'll have three different types of traps available to purchase at the meeting, two for Possums, and a new option to tackle Rats & Mice. We endevour to make these traps as cheap as we can to the public and provide a consession to those who need it.

D-Rat Rat & Mice Trap *NEW*

The D-rat is a simple to use trap for Rats & Mice. It comes with mounting options and can be used indoors & out. W2L member price $25.00 ea

Timms Possum Trap

The Timms is a very robust trap, easy to place and simple to operate. W2L member price $40.00 ea

For those worried about roaming bird life and pets we have the Trapinator. This trap is designed to be attached to a tree or post at a level that birds and pets can't get at. It is also very simple to operate. W2L member price $40.00 ea

Ongoing Argentine Ant Eradication - Minnehaha/Hui Road/Woodlands Park

To our neighbours on Minnehaha Ave, Woodlands Park and Huia Road,

Thank you all for your very generous support and help in our 1st stage of our Argentine Ant eradiation in April. And especially thank you to the many hands who helped to lay the bait out.

From all the surveying we have so far carried out we feel our first baiting has been 99% successful. Already many of us have noticed an increase in native insects and birds in the worst infested areas. The remaining Argentine Ant population has so far been very significantly reduced (with the current ants present being born since our last eradication as predicted). This is the largest mainland Argentine Ant baiting programme done in our country so far, and we are very optimistic due to such a positive community effort so far!

In order to further reduce the Argentine Ant population, we will need to carry out another mass neighbourhood Argentine baiting session in Spring (Sat 8th September, with a rain-date 15th September – with a reminder notice out before then).

Before then, Auckland Council has offered to bring in their Argentine Ant sniffer dog through our area to double check where the ants are. We will notify you if this goes ahead as planned.

We all need everyone’s continued help and support to remove these ants, and we risk re-infestation if we miss just one of their tiny nests/queens when baiting, so every property in our infested area needs to be baited again. They are in the world’s top 100 pest list and are devastating to our environment and to our homes if allowed to prosper.

If you would like more information on this, please contact Mark Harvey.

Laingholm Public Meeting - May 27

Thank you to all who showed up to our community hui at Laingholm Hall last Sunday - it was extremely successful - we loaned out tims traps to everyone but 1 or 2 folks in the room and so we are now managing to cover Laingholm more carefully and it can only grow (the photo is from the hui).

Laingholm Meeting 27 May

This on top of the extensive possum and rat trapping going in in parts of Woodlands Park and Waima already. We have plans to set up traps in the Manchester Unity Block now we have Exhibition Drive and associated areas covered (with thanks to Watercare's sponsorship and partnership in this). We are about to be trapping near Scenic Drive (thanks to Ecomatters and Auckland Council Biosecurity support). We are planning some more trap lines along private land in Laingholm. Plus we are about to launch into a major rat trapping initiative... more soon on this. Lots going on (not to mention our extremely successful ongoing Argentine Ant eradication programme). Please get in touch with us if you would like to trap away invasive pests and/or would like some support... we work with all neighbours and groups in our area.

Action Meeting - Let's grow the momentum.

W2L Public Meeting
Where: Laingholm Village Hall
When: 3pm-5pm, Sunday 27th May

The foundation work is done and we are already catching a lot of pests, especially possums through our area and we need to get more local residents started with trapping on their properties.

Possum egg

Our first target is possum control. We worked out that it will take an average resident only about 15 minutes per week or less to rid their property of possums. Come to this meeting to get a possum trap for your property and to learn how to use it. The cost of a trap is $40 with concessions available for those who can't afford it. You will also get a personal report link to submit your trapping results. Can't make the meeting, but want to get involved? Then go to our Join Us page and fill in an application to purchase a possom trap or register your current trap with us.

Let's get started

We Need your Help

We are also looking for additional volunteers to help with the running of W2L. If you are interested in becoming a part of the W2L team, please come to the meeting to hear about the open volunteer positions. All you need is 1-3 hours per week and a desire to make our beautiful area a thriving sanctuary for native wildlife. We are a friendly team of locals with the same vision.

We need helpers

What we've achieved so far

To date we have been achieving the following:

  • Established a website. Please visit us at www.w2l.nz
  • A new possum and rat trap line along Exhibition Drive that we are maintaining regularly (with Watercare support - and they have pledged more support to extend this trap line even further).
  • 2 grants successfully awarded towards the purchase of possum and rat traps for locals across our areas (for those who would like them with thanks to Ecomatters).
  • Expanded trapping for possums in the forests around Minnehaha Ave.
  • More efforts to trap stoats throughout the area.
  • We have permission from council to set up trapping across the Bishops Bush/Scenic Drive section of our valley and coordination with locals to set this up (we are about to apply for money for this). Our first big goal is to ring-fence our area with trapping, and we are part of the way there.

What we've acheived

Want to help, but can't make the meeting?

Please get in touch by email at contact@w2l.nz. Or if you want to talk with someone, you can give Mark Harvey a call on 817 8506.

Exhibition traps giving results

Well we've been monitoring the traps along Exhibition Drive for a number of weeks now, and have been getting good results. One possum trap has had a possum in it each time we've checked, and the goodnature traps have seen to numerous rats.

We are currently talking with Watercare on extending the traps along the rest of Exhibition Drive, and increasing the trap density.
